Phylodog's Rubi

In over my head...

I decided that I had to have a scale version of my 1:1 Rubicon so I've been plugging along on this thing for more than a month. Most of the first three weeks were spent researching and gathering parts. I need to give credit to SRJeeper for the design inspiration, his Rubicon is incredible so I have followed his lead considerably. Here is my 1:1:

I started by finding a body. Thanks to BiGDaWgZ I found just what I was looking for and he even painted it the color that I needed for me. He did a great job on it and I think it shows. I've bumped and nicked it up a little bit since I got it but I figure that's gonna happen sooner or later anyway as I plan to wheel this things quite a bit.

I started by using cardboard to come up with a template for the chassis:

I also started ordering components for the build. Some new, some used. Here's a list of what I went with.

RC4WD R2 Tranny
RC4WD Killer Transfer Case
RC4WD Scale Shocks
RC4WD Metal Rod Ends
RC4WD Plastic T-Rex Axles
RC4WD 1.55" Steel Wheels
RC4WD 1.55" Mud Thrashers
Scale Offroad hardware & weights for the wheels
RC4WD Cone Washers
JunFac Universal Shafts (cut down)
MIP Shaft (cut down)
Cutting Board for cross members
RPP Outback Series Bumpers & Tire Carrier
3Racing Winch
Novak Rooster Crawler Combo w/55TMotor
Futuba 3PM Tx/Rx (probably a bad decision)

I cut the chassis templates out of 1/8" aluminum strips and drilled holes for the skid plate/transfer case mount, upper & lower links and the cross members. I then bought what I needed to start brazing and fabricated the upper link mounts for the axles. After mounting the R2 Tranny at an angle to help with drive line angle I started measuring and making the links. I mounted the skid plate and started cutting down the JunFac shafts to fit. Once that was done I found locations to mount the shocks and got them installed. I checked for binding and have just the slightest amount at full flex but I think when I limit the flex it will prevent it.

I just installed the rear bumper this morning and this is what I have at the moment:

The ride height in the front is just a bit high at the moment but I installed clear tubing on the shocks which I can trim down a bit once I get everything installed. The battery will sit just behind the motor and up against the rear of the firewall. The steering servo will be just in front of the tranny as well as the ESC (I think). I plan to tuck the receiver between the frame rails behind the rear axle (hopefully).

I'm less than two months into RC and everything was built with a hack saw, files and a drill press so don't hammer me too hard, lol, but I'd love to hear any suggestions or comments about what I've done. This is actually the 2nd chassis I've made, there were a few too many mistake holes in the first one so I scrapped it.

I've still got a lot to do. Mount and wire up all of the electronics, mount the front bumper & winch, create the round tubes which protect the winch on the front bumper, find and install fog & spot lights on the bumper and windshield and buy a spare tire & wheel. I will probably sell the Futuba receiver since it's more complicated than I know how to operate and the 3rd channel won't run the winch.

Lemme know what you guys think!

njai, it seems like he is running a droop on this one. If you look at the way the shocks look. They seem kind of compressed already

So it might not thouch at all...

Correct! It'll be full droop or just shy of and the shaft/link don't make contact thankfully. I was concerned about that until I got it on there. It's close but not touching.

Well I finally got the battery, servo, ESC & Rx installed and wired up and it's alive!! I was concerned that I wasn't going to be able to fit it all in there but it worked out.

It runs a little rough, I believe it is due to the steep driveline angles. It rolled smooth without any binding before I hooked everything up though so I'm not positive what's going on yet. I was hoping these shafts would work but I may have to look at other options.

Anyway she moves and articulates pretty well. I'm going to put some spacers on the shocks to limit the droop just a little bit. I'm currently running w/o oil or springs in the shocks. The stock springs are way too stiff for droop so I need to find replacements (any help here would be greatly appreciated). Took it out in the snow for a few minutes to get the pics.

Still lots to do but I think the hard part is over now. The body sits pretty snug on the chassis but I need to mount it to be more secure. I will probably use L brackets and velcro for this. I also need to wire up the winch but my 3PM won't run it anyway so I'm in no hurry on this.

I need to make some tubes to protect the winch like on my 1:1 but I'm not sure what to use. The bumper is delrin and I don't know what material would work best to attach to the bumper? I will also start looking into lights pretty soon and eventually braze up a roll cage for it.

Lemme know what you guys think. I'm pretty pleased with it for my first attempt at a ground up build.
